During the spring 2025 semester, CSUF OER advocates were blindsided by the news that our campus was adopting an automatic textbook billing program. After years of working with faculty, the bookstore, and university administrators to build our OER program, we feared this was the end of the road. After our moment of shock and despair passed, we rallied our advocates across campus to push back against this oncoming program. Within six months, we raised the issue from hand-wringing in the library to a campus-wide discussion that existed beyond our original contact points and successfully halted its implementation. This session will describe the approach we took to developing cross-campus collaborations that halted the launch of this program. The practical strategies developed to reflect the ethics of openness will be shared with other OER advocates for implementation. This session will help participants prepare for unexpected shifts, enabling them to move from shock to action immediately.
