As AI becomes increasingly integrated into education we must effectively and ethically engage with it. But AI is only the latest in a long line of hot edtech tools. Educators lack structured guidance on aligning new integrations - from gamechangers like Wikipedia and the Web to distractions like Second Life and NFTs with the principles of open pedagogy. Without support, educators risk using new technologies in ways that may compromise our core values.
To prepare librarians to understand the opportunities and challenges created by new technologies, our Open Pedagogy Incubator uses AI as a case study to introduce a framework for evaluating edtech. With funding from the IMLS and our state library, we brought together statewide cohorts of university, community college, and public librarians to develop and expand a framework for including open values in edtech. This panel brings together participants to discuss their experiences, introduce the framework, and share lessons learned.
